“He stole the soul of his characters”: so Francesco Rosi said of him. Essential mimicry and search for truth in interpreting each character: this was Gian Maria Volonté. He had the ability to become physically identical to his characters not thanks to make-up, but almost exclusively to gestures: an example of this is his president of the DC in “Il Case Moro”. But also with the anarchist Nicola Sacco, in the 71st film “Sacco e Vanzetti”. Since its cinematic beginnings it is clear what Volontè wants to bring to the screen: social themes, the last ones, the oppressed. Each of his films is a precise and conscious choice. In 1970, the absolute masterpiece: “Investigation of a citizen above all suspicion” The Piazza Fontana massacre had just occurred, and the protagonist of the film is a clear reference to Commissioner Calabresi. The film wins the Oscar for best foreign film. The actor also tries his hand at the ‘spaghetti western’ genre: he plays the villain and psychopath Ramon Rojo, in the cult “For a fistful of dollars”, and then in “For a few dollars more”. In the 70s the long association with the director Francesco Rosi also began and in 1972 they filmed “Il Caso Mattei” together, on the alleged assassination of the head of Eni which took place 10 years earlier. With his films Volontè changes not only the approach to acting , but also to the life of the actor, with the choice or rejection of a film that becomes an existential choice. He died on December 6, 1994, in Greece, where he was shooting “The gaze of Ulysses”, after the previous day he was seen singing “Bandiera rossa” with some workers.
