The death toll in Vietnam as a result of Typhoon Yagi has risen to 262 people, and 83 people are still missing, authorities said today, DPA reported.

Typhoon Yagi, the strongest in North Vietnam in about 30 years, passed through the region a week ago, bringing fierce winds and heavy rains, BTA recalls.

More than 1,900 people were injured, the Vietnam Disaster Management Office said in a report released today.

Among the dead and missing are over 80 people from the same village that was completely destroyed by the September 10 natural disaster in Bao Yen District, Lao Cai Province. The bodies of another 30 people were found around the site where a bus, five cars and 10 motorbikes were swept away by mud masses a day earlier in Khao Bang province.

The typhoon has damaged about 170,000 houses and more than 73,000 are still flooded, according to the disaster agency.

Nearly 2 million farm animals, mostly poultry and livestock, died, and almost 200,000 hectares of rice fields were significantly damaged.

A week after Yagi passed, Hanoi authorities are struggling to clear 40,000 wind-blown trees blocking streets.

Millions of children in northern Vietnam are in urgent need of aid after the typhoon, with about 3 million people left without access to clean drinking water, a UNICEF report said.

According to the agency, about 550 health facilities and more than 800 schools have been damaged, with 2 million students at risk of having their education interrupted.

UNICEF estimates that about 19 million people – or a fifth of Vietnam’s population – were affected by the typhoon.
