Twenty seven Guatemalans will represent the country in robotics competitions in Greece and Mexico in September and October 2024. These chapines, students between 10 and 18 years old from seven departments of the country, secured a place in the National Robotics Team by standing out in the National Meeting Balam ProjectHow cool!

A group of 27 talented young Guatemalanscoming from various regions of the country, is preparing for represent Guatemala in two international robotics competitions: he First Global Challenge 2024 en Grecia and the Robomatrix 2024 in Mexico.

These students, originally from Chiquimula, Escuintla, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala City, Sacatepéquez, Chichicastenango, Quiché municipality and Huehuetenango, have demonstrated exceptional skills in robotics and have earned their place in the National Robotics Selection 2024 after standing out in the Balam Project. During the participation process, they will be supported by a group of ten mentors from both the Galileo University and Grupo Intelecto.

The National Robotics Team was officially sworn in on August 21 at a ceremony held at the National Palace of Culture. The event was attended by the Vice President of the Republic, Karin Herrera, along with authorities from the National Secretariat of Science and Technology – Senacyt – and the Galileo University.

First Global Challenge 2024: An Olympic challenge for young innovators

He First Global Challenge is an international robotics competition that resembles a technological Olympics, bringing together young people from over 190 countries. This year, the competition will take place from 26 to 29 September in Athens, Greece, and the central theme is “Feeding the Future”. This challenge invites participants to design and program a robot that will help them complete tasks in a thematic game that addresses global challenges related to food security and sustainability.

The Guatemalan delegation is made up of five students who are passionate, of course, about robotics, but also about sports, music and other areas.

Robomatrix 2024: Innovation and competition in Mexico

For its part, Robomatrix 2024 is a competition organized by the Latin American Society of Science and Technology – SOLACYT – which will take place from October 24 to 26 in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. In this competition, students from primary to high school will participate in various categories, including Robofut, Mazey Car Raceamong others.

The Guatemalan delegation that will participate in this event is made up of 22 students.

Balam Project: The seedbed of Guatemalan robotics

The Balam Project was launched in 2015 as a joint initiative of Galileo University and Grupo Intelecto. What began as a robotics competition has become an official process to select members of the National Robotics Team. This project begins with an educational program that covers the fundamentals of electronics, programming, and 3D design, and culminates in competitions where young people apply their knowledge and compete for a place on the national team.
