The death toll in Vietnam from Typhoon Yagi has risen to 281, and 67 people are still missing, authorities said, quoted by DPA. The economic losses for 1.6 billion dollars is clear from an assessment of the Vietnamese government.

Yagi is the strongest typhoon to hit North Vietnam in about 30 years.

More than 1,900 people were injured, the Vietnam Disaster Management Office said in a report. According to the disaster management office, the typhoon damaged about 235,000 homes. Over 2.6 million farm animals, mostly poultry and cattle, were killed, and over 200,000 hectares of rice fields were significantly damaged.

The floods have now receded, but affected areas are still struggling with clean-up efforts.

According to the initial estimates of the Vietnamese government, typhoon “Yagi” has caused preliminary damage to Vietnam in the amount of about 1.6 billion dollars, causing a loss of about 0.15% of the gross domestic product this year, writes BTA.

The typhoon previously passed through the Philippines and China.
