New Delhi ∙ Indian Railways has successfully completed the trial run of India’s longest freight train ‘Super Vasuki’ with 295 wagons. As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, South East Central Railway inaugurated the train on August 15.

The first run was from Korba in Chhattisgarh to Rajnandgao in Nagpur. The train left at 1.50 pm on Monday and took around 11.20 hours to cover the distance of 267 km. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared a video of the train passing through Kothari Road station on Twitter.

Super Vasuki is built by combining five goods trains into one unit. The 3.5 km long train has six engines. It can carry up to 27,000 tonnes. It takes about four minutes for the train to cross a station. Super Vasuki can deliver a day’s worth of coal for a 3,000 MW power plant in a single trip. Currently, a freight train in India can carry a maximum of 9,000 tonnes of coal. Super Vasuki will deliver three times this amount.

Earlier this year, a coal shortage plunged the country into a power crisis. Railways reckons that Super Vasuki will help avoid shortage of raw materials like coal at power stations.
