According to figures communicated on Tuesday, September 5, by the Minister of Education, Gabriel Attal, “298 people” out of twelve million students showed up at the entrance to their school dressed in an abaya at the start of the school year on Monday.

” A great majority ” of the persons concerned “agreed to remove” this long traditional dress covering the body, prohibited shortly before the return of the pupils to class, detailed the minister sur BFM-TVwhile “67 people (…) did not agree to abide by the rule [et] have returned home. In the next few days, they will come back since they have to go to school”.

The Minister clarified that the figures are not final. “Yesterday, for high schools, in most cases, it was mainly the second who made their return to school”he insists, adding that other situations may still arise on Tuesday. “We also gave them a letter to their families to explain that secularism is not a constraint, it is a freedom”he added.

“We have sent, in the establishments for which we know that these situations arise, trained personnel”, said the Minister. Monday morning, Gabriel Attal had announced on RTL that 513 establishments − out of the approximately 48,000 schools and 10,500 colleges and high schools − have been identified as “potentially affected by these issues”and that there is « a little over 2,000 personnel who have been trained”.

Emmanuel Macron defends the ban

The ban, which also applies to the wearing of qamis, the male version of the abaya, was the subject of an interim order before the Council of State. This request, filed on Friday on behalf of the association Action the rights of Muslims to obtain the suspension of the ban, will be examined this Tuesday at 3 p.m. THE code de justice administrative provides for the decision to be rendered within forty-eight hours after the close of the investigation.
