Holstein Kiel has made it into the Bundesliga. After the 1-1 draw against Düsseldorf, the party started on the fjord – with hard-drinking players.
Schleswig-Holstein finally has its first Bundesliga team. Holstein Kiel secured promotion to the German top flight with a 1-1 draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday evening. Even before the final whistle, a few celebrating fans ran onto the pitch because they thought the game was over.
When referee Sven Jablonski ended the game, the party started. The Kiel players were also in the middle of it all, celebrating with the fans. In particular, Timo Becker, who was named “Beer Captain” by his teammates, announced pure ecstasy during the night. The defender said on Sky: “I’m going to drink myself crazy. (…) I’m going to tear down the stadium and cut everything down to pieces.”
Becker also wanted to make sure that teammate Steven Skrzybski “no longer recognized himself.” Goalkeeper Timon Weiner looked a little more soberly at the promotion, even if he couldn’t believe what had happened. “I have to classify it first. It’s a feeling I’ve never experienced before,” he said on the Sky microphone.
Nicolai Remberg, who was promoted from the Regionalliga to the 3rd league with Preußen Münster just a year ago, said: “When the referee blew the final whistle, a current went through my body.” Captain Philipp Sander, who is moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach, raved about his team: “The game reflects the season. Everyone fought for each other. From the first to the last matchday. I’m simply at a loss for words.”
