With the 2-2 draw on the last matchday, promotion for HSV is becoming even more distant. There is a threat of an unpopular title.
This year too, Hamburger SV could miss promotion to the 1st Bundesliga. After the draw against 1. FC Magdeburg on matchday 29, HSV is now eight points behind a direct promotion place and three points behind the relegation place. A previously unthinkable scenario is emerging.
Steffen Baumgart is the eighth coach to try his hand at the “mission of resurgence”. Since relegation in 2018, the Hanseatic League’s goal has been to return to the first Bundesliga. But so far the project has mostly narrowly failed. If things don’t work out again this year, the Rothosen will probably receive a well-known title.
Relegation after 54 years
If HSV doesn’t get promoted, but Holstein Kiel and FC St. Pauli do, Hamburg will become the “dinosaur of the league” again. No other club will then play in the 2nd Bundesliga for as long as HSV. At the moment, city rivals FC St. Pauli hold this title.
The Kiezkicker have been playing in the German lower house continuously since 2011. Holstein Kiel was added in 2017. A year later, HSV was relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in its history. After more than 54 years of first division football, it was over – at that time the club was still considered a first division dinosaur.
The second division dinosaur
Now Hamburger SV could become the dinosaur of the league again. Unfortunately for many HSV fans, it was in the second division. After all: With the seventh second division year in a row, they are far from being in the top 10 in the record list. Fortuna Cologne is at number one on this list.
The record holder was in the 2nd Bundesliga for 26 years in a row between 1974 and 2000. After relegation in 2000, Fortuna from Cologne never went back. Until then, HSV still has a few attempts to make the dream of promotion come true.
