2nd Meeting of the Graduates of the University of the Aegean

The University of the Aegean Alumni Association in collaboration with the University of the Aegean held the 2nd Meeting of the Aegean Alumni on December 2nd in Athens (EBEA, Academy 7 Syntagma).

Former Chancellors, professors, administrators and graduates met in a celebration for the University of the Aegean. It is estimated that over 600 participants visited EBEA at our Foundation’s event.

The present from the political leadership was given by the Secretary General of Aegean and Island Policy Mr. Manolis Koutoulakis, the Secretary General of Higher Education Mr. Odysseas Zoras, while a greeting was addressed by Mr. Charalambos Athanasiou, pr. Vice President of the Parliament and Member of Parliament of Lesvos, Mr. Manos Konsolas, pr. Deputy Minister of Tourism and Member of Parliament for Dodecanese, Mr. Panagiotis Paraskevaidis, Member of Parliament for Lesvos, Mr. Stavros Michaelidis Member of Parliament for Chios, Mr. Markos Kafouros, Member of Parliament for Cyclades, Mr. Christos Bardos, the Deputy Governor of the South Aegean Region, Mr. Alexandros Lyberis, the Mayor of West Samos and the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Rhodes Mr Kostas Taraslias. At the same time, greetings were sent by Ms. Zetta Makri, Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Mr. Yiannis Pappas, Deputy Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Member of Parliament for the Dodecanese and Mr. Stamatis Karmantzis, Mayor of Chios.

The President of SAPA Andreas Karasarinis referred to what happened in the previous two years in the Association, while the Rector of the University of the Aegean Professor Dimitris Papageorgiou referred to how important the cooperation between the University of the Aegean and its Alumni Association is and emphasized that the Association will be a bridge between different generations of the Foundation’s graduates, offering all of them multiplying social and professional networking benefits, but also a key source of support for the Foundation, contributing to the continuous improvement and upgrading of its services.

The event commemorated Kostas Sofoulis, the first President of the Governing Committee of the University of the Aegean, as well as Emeritus Professor Themistocles Lekkas, the first Rector of the University of the Aegean, recognizing their work and contribution to the University of the Archipelago.

The report of the Board of Directors was carried out by the Vice-President Kostas Tsiagliotis, as well as the financial report by the Treasurer Giorgos Stratigellis.

Also, the former Chancellors, Mr. Chartas, Gritzalis and Vitsilakis, as well as the Deans of the Schools of the Foundation.

In the context of the event, lectures were held by Professor Christos Kalloniatis, President of the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication of the University of the Aegean and Homer Tsimaras VR Expert graduate of the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication, Associate Professor Konstantinos Gatzionis, President of the Department of Food and Nutrition Science, Professor Drosos Koutsoumba, President of the Department of Oceanography and Marine Biosciences, Assistant Professor Paleologos Palaeologus, of the Agricultural University of Athens, graduate of the University of the Aegean, while at the same time the Spin off company SciDrones for the protection of the marine environment was presented by the Associate Professor of the Department of Sciences of Oceanography and Marine, Konstantinos Topouzelis. This was followed by a presentation of research on the graduates from the Liaison Office, while in their presentations the companies Ernst & Young, Dialectica, Guidepoint emphasized how important the cooperation of the Foundation through the Liaison Office with companies is, so that there is an immediate absorption of graduates in the labor market. Also, graduates from abroad presented their experiences, as well as start up companies they founded.

Finally, the best graded students per academic unit were awarded, receiving an honorary plaque and the symbolic sum of 500 euros each.

At the same time, the first graduates who received a degree from the Department of Mediterranean Studies in 2003 were also awarded, continuing the tradition of awarding the first graduates from the past (last year the Department of Environment had its honor). Mytileneos”, the Zoi Group Enterprises in Rhodes and the Samaropoulos family for the scholarships to the leading students.
