3.4 tons of cocaine arrived in Belgium from the port of Montevideo

In a recent operation in the port of Antwerp, Belgiumthe confiscation of a significant amount of cocaine that was being transported by a ship coming from the port of Montevideo. The Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office has reported two discoveries amounting to approximately 3.4 tons of drugsthus triggering an ongoing investigation.

The first seizure took place last December 22th, when authorities discovered 1.24 tons of cocaine in a container on a ship that had arrived from Guayaquil, Ecuador. Later, on December 28, customs officials intercepted a second shipment of 2.16 tons of cocaine on another ship coming from Montevideo.

According to information provided by Belgian media, the Antwerp judicial police have launched an exhaustive investigation into drug trafficking. In Uruguay, the authorities have been alerted about the situationand an investigation is currently being carried out in collaboration with the Belgian authorities, as confirmed by El Observador.

Close sources indicate that the investigation will determine if the drugs were loaded in Montevideo along with the legitimate merchandise or if it was a detour along the way, thus raising questions about the possible involvement of different actors in this illicit operation.
