3.9 million smuggled cigarettes are discovered in a railway container / Day

On August 12, 2024, a cargo train from the Republic of Belarus entered the Indra customs control point, the composition of which was checked with a cargo control X-ray device. During the control process, the scan image analysis expert suspected the movement of undeclared goods in one of the containers. According to the accompanying documents, there was an item in it – plastic baskets for laundry.

The in-depth customs control of the wagon was carried out at the Daugavpils goods station. Upon opening the container, the customs officials found that visually the cargo corresponded to the accompanying documents. When partially unloading the goods, it was discovered that cardboard boxes with the marking of the Grodno Tobacco Factory were hidden in the depth of the container under the laundry baskets.

A total of 392 boxes of cigarettes were hidden in the container. As a result of customs control, 3,920,000 cigarettes or 196,000 packs of “NZ Gold”, “NZ Black”, “Minsk 5 Superslims” and “Minsk” cigarettes with excise stamps of the Republic of Belarus were seized.

The unpaid amount of taxes in the state budget for this amount of cigarettes is approximately 920,900 euros.

During the customs control, when the signs of a criminal offense were detected – the smuggling of tobacco products in a significant amount, the case materials were handed over to the Tax and Customs Police Department of the SRS for making a decision on the initiation of criminal proceedings.
