The distribution of humanitarian aid has not started, and no population has been affected by the explosion.

“I blame most of the attacks on Red Cross workers. It is unlikely that a bomb attack will hit an aid distribution site. Out of deep pain, we mourn the loss of our comrades while caring for the wounded. This tragedy causes deep grief that those who lose a loved one in armed conflict know very well,” said Mirjana Spoljaric, ICRC President.

The ICRC team was preparing to deliver wood and charcoal briquettes to vulnerable families in the village of Viroliubivka, in anticipation of the coming winter, when the vehicles they were traveling in were attacked.

ICRC teams maintain a regular presence in the Donetsk region, and our vehicles clearly display the Red Cross logo. The deaths of three ICRC colleagues come amid a sharp increase in deaths among humanitarian workers around the world over the past two years.

The ICRC urgently calls for respect for international humanitarian law by, among other measures, taking all possible precautions to ensure that those involved in humanitarian operations are not attacked or caught in the conflict.
