Players of Rayo Majadahonda, from the Spanish third division of football, refused to finish their match against Sestao River on Saturday, after a clash between their Senegalese team’s goalkeeper, Cheikh Sarr, and fans of the opposing team, who were accused of directing racist insults at him.

The Senegalese goalkeeper was sent off after an altercation with a fan behind his goal, which prompted his team to leave the field and the referees to stop the match.

The Spanish press reported that many Sestao River fans insulted Sheikh Sarr after their team’s second goal in the 83rd minute of the match.

Rayo Makhadahonda wrote on his account in “X”: “Our team will not resume the match after our player was subjected to unacceptable racist insults.”

For his part, team captain Jorge Casado expressed his regret on his Instagram account, saying: “What happened today is very unfortunate.” Part of the stadium shouts racist insults against our colleague Sheikh Sarr, because of the color of his skin.”

He added: “What a shame, it seems crazy that we have reached the year 2024, and we have brainless idiots in stadiums behaving frantically. We are all sheikhs, no to racism.”

Earlier Saturday, Sevilla also condemned the insults directed at its Argentine player, Marcos Acuña, and its coach, Quique Sanchez Flores, during the match against its host, Getafe.

Real Madrid’s Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior, who himself has been subjected to racist insults on numerous occasions since joining the Royal Club in 2018, said: “I will not play this weekend (due to the suspension). But we witnessed three despicable cases of racism in Spain on Saturday alone.”

The Seleção star added: “Racists must be denounced, and matches with them in the stands cannot continue.” We will not achieve victory until the racists leave the stadiums directly and go to prison, the place they deserve.”

These new events come only a few days after the friendly match between Spain and Brazil that was organized specifically in response to insults directed at Vinicius, who has become an anti-racism figure.
