For some students, learning a second language is not an easy task, and it does not necessarily have to do with their ability or skills. This phenomenon, rather, could be linked to common oversights that can be corrected with time and practice.
Now that a new school year has begun in the Costa region, it is likely that children will make mistakes that are very common, and that could hinder their process of learning English, which is the language that most bilingual educational entities offer as part of their curriculum.
Below, Deborah Chiriboga High, general director of the North American Ecuadorian Center (CEN), explains 3 reasons why children and adolescents may have complications in learning and mastering English, with the aim that both they, and their parents, can take the necessary correctives.
1. They do not dedicate enough time to practicing: Regardless of the level of English they have, it is important that the language practice is not only during their classes.
2. They use obsolete strategies and do not have adequate guidance: Learning mechanisms such as translation and/or memorization, related to the grammatical translation method, are obsolete and ineffective. That means that, upon graduation, they are fully capable of giving speeches, listening and participating in advanced conversations, and reading materials written in English,” he says.
3. They are not familiar with the culture: A fundamental part of studying a language is recognizing that the cultural aspect of that language is an integral part of the learning process. Thus, students can access free of charge exhibitions, workshops, concerts, book launches, colloquiums, conferences, film festivals, among other activities, which contribute significantly to their mastery of English.
