It was 30 years ago today that Nirvana performed a memorable performance in Portugal, more specifically at the Pavilhão Dramático de Cascais, which had a capacity for 9,000 seats and at the time was the largest concert hall in the country.

Tickets had been sold out for months and according to Ricardo Casimiro, the concert’s promoter, if dates had been available, Nirvana could have played three or four concerts in Portugal.

The Buzzcoks, a reference in British punk and appreciated by Nirvana, opened the show. The band led by Cobain performed a selection of songs from their three studio albums, including the hits “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are”.

In the 90s, Nirvana were already arguably one of the biggest rock bands in the world. The tragedy that befell the band with the premature death of Kurt Cobain, just two months after the concert in Portugal, added a touch of melancholy to its grandeur.
