Fifty years are worth celebrating! Unfortunately, Paris Saint-Germain, traveling to Reims this Saturday at 5 p.m., will not play in its Parc des Princes this weekend to celebrate the golden anniversary between the capital club and its historic stadium. Indeed, fifty years ago to the day, on November 10, 1973, the Rouge et Bleu played the very first official match in their history at the Parc, against Red Star, a Parisian derby which brought together the two future promotions from Group B of Division 2 1973-1974. Winners of the Audoniens 3 goals to 1, the Parisians were radiant to bring down the leader at the time and therefore climb back into the standings by one point on the 13th day.

Just Fontaine, former PSG coach from 1973 to 1976 and who died last March, had mentioned to the club media his memory of this moment in history, of which he was one of the main actors: “The Park discovered a new team, with a designer President and not many resources. I explained to the players before the meeting that they had an important card to play, it was a change from Camp des Loges and the 3,000 spectators present. It was a unique opportunity to be recognized by the general public.” A great opportunity seized by the men of “Justo”, who initially played as a curtain-raiser to the first division meeting between PFC and Sochaux.

While the Parisian club was not popular at the time, no less than 20,000 people wanted to try their hand at the spectacle of a derby between the two little thumbs of the capital. First scorer of the match, and therefore of PSG at the Park in an official match, Othniel Dossevi remembered “especially that the more the match progressed, the more the Park filled up. When the final whistle blew, more than 30,000 people were cheering us on.” The Stadium, which had hosted the first final in the history of the Champions League (formerly the Champions Club Cup) between Real Madrid and the Stade de Reims of a certain Just Fontaine, then discovered the team which would reside within it from the following year until today.

Since then, the Parisian club has played no less than 1,178 official matches on its Porte d’Auteuil ground, the majority of which were in Division 1/Ligue 1 (916 matches). It was in this same stadium that the capital club won the very first trophy in its history in 1982, in the Coupe de France final against AS Saint-Étienne, after a penalty shootout went down to the wire. , in the 120th minute, thanks to a goal from a certain Dominique Rocheteau, the “green angel” who became Rouge et Bleu two years earlier. Rebelote in 1986, with a PSG-Bastia which definitively sealed PSG’s first title in the championship. With a total of 129 European Cup matches, the Parc des Princes is also the scene of great European evenings, engraved in the minds of Parisian supporters.

The statistical results at the Parc des Princes are quite positive for the capital club. In its fortress, PSG won 63.5% of its official matches. The biggest Parisian victory in its stadium doesn’t go back that long. On January 19, 2019, PSG won over Guingamp with a score of 9-0, enough to avenge the elimination in the Coupe de la Ligue, a few days earlier against the Breton club. Finally, the Parc’s top scorer is not Kylian Mbappé. Edinson Cavani still has an advantage over his heir as top scorer in the club’s history, with 110 goals at the Parc, compared to 106 for the Bondynois. There is no doubt that the Parisian number 7 will surpass this record this season and perpetuate the history written in Rouge et Bleu at the Parc des Princes.
