Dividends for fiscal year 2022 are paid in fiscal year 2023. The federal government is much lower than expected. In the 2022 budget, the government has projected a dividend of Rs 73,948 crore from the central bank and government-run lenders.

The decision to disburse the dividend was taken at the 596th meeting of the Reserve Bank’s Executive Board of Directors on Friday, chaired by Reserve Bank Governor Sakthikantha Das, the RBI said.

In May last year, the Reserve Bank announced a dividend of about Rs 99,122 crore for the nine-month period (July 2020 to March 2021). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given a 9-month reprieve due to the fact that it has adjusted its fiscal year to coincide with the fiscal year. It is noteworthy that the RBI had earlier followed the fiscal year July-June.

As the RBI manages the state funds, the profit or surplus received by the RBI each year is paid as dividends to the Central Government. This method has been followed since the inception of RBI in 1934. For fiscal 2019, the RBI paid a dividend of about Rs 1,23,414 crore to the central government.
