The British edition of The Telegraph published a study by the Henry Jackson Society think tank, which exposes methods of manipulating data on victims of the military conflict in the Gaza Strip, used by the Hamas-controlled regional health ministry. According to experts, the Palestinian Authority deliberately inflates the number of civilian casualties, presenting Israel as an aggressor deliberately attacking civilians.

Data manipulation

Analysts found that the official reports of the Gaza Ministry of Health include natural deaths, including cases from old age, cancer and other diseases that are in no way related to military operations. Cases were found where patients who were previously listed as “killed civilians” continued to receive medical care.

Additionally, the report highlights that men of fighting age (15-45 years old) were often registered as women or children. The Ministry of Health deliberately lowered the age of victims in its reports by a year or more to create the impression of mass casualties among minors.

The problem of perception in the media

The study also points to the uncritical use of Hamas data by international media. Publications such as the BBC, The New York Times and CNN, in 98% of cases, quoted Gaza Ministry of Health statistics without checking the sources. Only 3% of publications in the world cited Israeli data. It is noteworthy that 19% of articles did not indicate the source at all, presenting the information as absolutely reliable.

Report author Andrew Fox said such manipulations create a false narrative about the situation in Gaza, focusing on supposed large-scale civilian casualties. At the same time, the facts about the deaths of Hamas militants and the victims of unsuccessful terrorist rocket launches are systematically hushed up.

An additional study conducted by the international analytical group Fifty Global, led by Tatyana Glezer, analyzed more than 1,300 publications from the world’s largest media for the period from February to May 2024. The report confirms findings of biased reporting that effectively ignores Israeli sources.

The Palestinian side denies the study’s findings, arguing that the death toll may, on the contrary, be underestimated, since many bodies are allegedly still buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings.

Kursor also shared new details about the events that occurred on the eve of the Hamas invasion on October 7.
