The tragedy occurred at the popular ski resort of Gudauri in Georgia. This resort, which attracts many tourists, including from Israel, turned out to be the site of the death of 12 employees of a local restaurant. All of them were found dead in the morning.
Local police have launched an active investigation to try to determine the cause of their deaths. The cause remains unclear, but according to the BBC, the death was most likely due to carbon dioxide poisoning. After the power went out, workers reportedly started an oil-powered generator in the room where they were sleeping. It is believed that this generator could have caused the tragedy.
According to local authorities, the workers’ bodies were found without signs of violence or injury. This strengthens suspicions that the death could have been the result of poisoning rather than a deliberate crime. Local police are treating the incident as an accidental homicide.
As the Georgian police reported: “We are actively conducting an investigation, conducting forensic examinations, interviewing witnesses and people related to the case. A forensic medical examination has also been ordered to establish the exact cause of death.”
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Tbilisi is working to bring the bodies of 11 Indian citizens back home. Embassy officials said: “We are in contact with the families of the victims and are committed to providing all possible assistance.”
