Multiple US federal agencies have launched investigations into Elon Musk and SpaceX over alleged security violations, with US and Israeli officials raising growing concerns about the protection of sensitive information.
According to The New York Times, serious allegations have been brought against Musk and his company for systematically violating security protocols. Three federal agencies are involved in the investigations: the Defense Inspectorate, the Air Force and the Office of Security Intelligence. These investigations began following troubling reports about the company’s practices.
One of the main reasons for the investigation was reports that Musk, who has Secret clearance at SpaceX, was allegedly hiding important information from the authorities. Among the charges: undisclosed meetings with foreign leaders, failure to fully report travel and failure to report drug use – which is mandatory even if it involves medications.
Tensions increased after the US Air Force refused to grant Musk higher levels of access to information, citing potential security risks. Allied countries, including Israel, have also expressed concerns about Musk’s ability to divulge sensitive information. During consultations between Israeli intelligence services and American security officials, Israeli sources called Musk an “unpredictable player.”
The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that SpaceX is a major contractor for the US government, managing $10 billion in contracts awarded from 2019 to 2023. Musk, known for his outspoken support of President-elect Donald Trump, was recently appointed to a position focused on improving the federal bureaucracy.
Musk responded to the investigations aggressively. On his platform X account, he claimed that “deep state traitors” were manipulating “hired journalists.” However, security officials remain concerned about his handling of sensitive information, especially given his habit of posting information on social media.
Experts warn that this situation could undermine the government’s institutional accountability. Danielle Bryan, head of the Project on Government Oversight, said such behavior “could erode the system of checks and balances” in democratic institutions.
