Late on the evening of December 28, PAL Airlines (PB) flight AC2259, operating under a codeshare agreement with Air Canada (AC), made an emergency landing at Halifax Airport due to landing gear malfunction.

The airliner, en route from St. John’s to Halifax, skidded down the runway with sparks flying from its wings as they touched the ground.

The aircraft involved was a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400, registration C-GPNA. The aircraft is 24 years old and is equipped with Pratt and Whitney engines.

Video footage taken during the incident showed the plane’s wings touching the surface of the runway, causing fire to ignite during landing. According to preliminary data, there were no injuries among passengers or crew members.

PAL Airlines, which operated under a codeshare agreement with Air Canada, is the second largest regional airline in eastern Canada. The airline’s headquarters are located at St. John’s International Airport, Newfoundland and Labrador. PAL Airlines operates scheduled passenger, cargo, air ambulance and charter services in eastern Canada.

The airline has several bases, including Halifax International Airport, Canadian Air Force Base Goose Bay and Montreal-Trudeau International Airport. As part of the PAL Group of Companies, the airline provides important air service to Canada’s eastern provinces.

The incident calls into question the effectiveness of aircraft maintenance protocols and emergency landing procedures at regional airports. Aviation authorities will investigate the cause of the landing gear malfunction and evaluate the performance of emergency services during the incident.
