A road bridge between the Brazilian cities of Estreito and Agiarnopolis collapsed, plunging trucks, a car and a motorcycle into the Tocantins River.

Euronews reports this.

The disaster occurred on December 22, when a truck carrying sulfuric acid drove along the 533-meter long crossing. At first it was reported that one person had died, but the latest data indicates ten victims, with eight people still missing.

The tragedy received particular publicity due to a video shot by Agiarnopolis city councilor Elias Junior. In his video, he showed cracks on the bridge, built 60 years ago, and warned about its instability under the weight of trucks. During filming, the bridge began to collapse, and in the background the cameraman could be heard shouting: “Look, look!”

The environmental situation is no less worrying. Along with 76 tons of sulfuric acid, 25 thousand liters of pesticides entered the river from another truck, which also crashed into the water. Environmentalists warn of a possible environmental disaster. Local residents were temporarily prohibited from using water from the river.

The bridge that collapsed was part of the BR-226 highway linking the capital Brasilia with the city of Belem, where the UN Climate Change Conference is scheduled to take place in 2025. The incident highlights the need to modernize infrastructure in the country as the accident not only caused damage to the environment but also claimed lives.

Earlier, Cursor reported that a passenger plane crashed into a residential area in Brazil.
