Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, will be buried next to his wife in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Several days of ceremonies and services will be held in his memory in Washington.
The BBC reports this.
The funeral will take place on January 9, when Carter will be given his final state honors. He will be interred in Plains, where he will rest next to Rosalyn, his wife, who passed away last year at the age of 96.
Carter died Sunday, two years after he was placed in hospice care.
A state memorial ceremony for Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, will take place on January 9 at the state level in Washington.
Carter’s family has accepted an invitation to pay his last respects in the Rotunda of the US Capitol, followed by a farewell ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral.
Carter’s casket will lie in state at the Capitol from noon on Jan. 7 until the morning of Jan. 9, when the building opens to anyone who wishes to pay their respects.
On the day of the funeral, January 9, there will be a national day of mourning and the US federal government will be closed as a mark of respect for James Earl Carter Jr., President Joe Biden said.
The state funeral will not be the only events commemorating the 39th president.
It is known that on January 4 the motorcade will pass through the Plains, where it will stop at the home where Carter grew up, and then head to Atlanta, where a public ceremony will take place at the Carter Presidential Center.
The remains of the former president will be in the presidential library from January 5 to 6.
After farewell ceremonies in Georgia and Washington, Carter will be buried in the Plains.
Dignitaries are expected at Jimmy Carter’s funeral. President Joe Biden, who agreed to deliver the eulogy in March 2023 at Carter’s request, will speak at the ceremony.
Typically, former presidents and first ladies attend the funerals of their predecessors. Jill Biden, Barack Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton are expected to attend the ceremony.
It is not yet known whether President-elect Donald Trump, who did not attend Rosalynn Carter’s funeral last year, will attend. At the same time, in 2018, he participated in the funeral ceremony in connection with the death of George H. W. Bush.
Let us remind you that “Cursor” wrote that, according to Biden, he had every chance of defeating his main political rival Donald Trump.
