Well-known Australian sports journalist Peter Laylor became the hero of a curious incident when, during a visit to the UK in 2019, he mistakenly paid $100 thousand for one glass of beer.
This was reported by The Guardian.
The incident occurred while Laylor was on a business trip while covering cricket matches. During a break between games, the journalist went to a local bar to drink beer. However, his favorite drink was not available, so he settled for a pilsner.
When it came time to pay for the order, his bank card failed several times, but the transaction eventually went through. The bartender invited Laylor to take the check, to which he, contrary to his habit, agreed.
“She looked at the receipt and suddenly exclaimed: “Oh no!” I asked what was wrong, and then she showed me the amount on the check – almost 55 thousand pounds (about 102.5 thousand Australian dollars). I was stunned and asked if she was going to fix it,” Laylor said.
Later, the journalist’s wife received a notice from the bank that a significant amount had been debited from the account, which caused even more concern.
Laylor returned to the bar the next evening to investigate the situation, but the employee who made the mistake chose to flee upon his arrival. The journalist suggested that the error occurred due to accidentally entering extra numbers during payment, but the bar made no attempt to return the money.
The situation received wide resonance after the story hit the media. Following public pressure and the bank’s intervention, the funds were returned, although it took several weeks.
Laylor noted with irony that this incident became the most memorable moment of his life:
“I’ve written books, covered major tournaments, raised children, but now I’ll forever be remembered as the man who paid $100,000 for a pint of beer.”
The journalist has since returned to the same bar, but with greater caution. This unusual story reminded us how important it is to be attentive even in the simplest situations.
