Ukrainian intelligence has uncovered Russian plans to transfer military equipment from Syria to Libya. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), at the naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus, the Russians are preparing equipment and weapons for shipment to Africa.
Mercenaries of the so-called “African Corps,” which is under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defense, are reportedly concentrated at the base in Tartus. On January 5, the Russian landing ships Ivan Gren and Alexander Otrakovsky, as well as the cargo ship Sparta, are scheduled to arrive here. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, on board one of the ships is Captain 1st Rank Yuri Davityan, Chief of Staff of the 121st Brigade of Landing Ships of the Russian Federation.
In addition, two more Russian vessels are planning to enter the port on January 8 – the universal truck Sparta II and the tanker Ivan Skobelev. Currently, these ships are heading to Tartus through the Strait of Gibraltar.
Russia plans to use the Sparta and Sparta II cargo ships to transport military equipment and weapons from Syria to Libya. Also operating in the Mediterranean Sea is the Russian frigate Admiral Golovko, which is preparing to refuel.
It is interesting that at the same time in Russia, at an airfield in the Vladimir region, equipment allegedly taken from Syria was unloaded. Among them were armored personnel carriers.
Experts note that the transfer of equipment and weapons to Libya indicates Russia’s desire to strengthen its military presence in the region, which could affect the further development of the situation in Africa.
