The situation in the Kursk region remains tense, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces are facing serious pressure from Russian troops. Military expert retired lieutenant general Igor Romanenko explained that the enemy is aware of the importance of Ukraine retaining this territory, since this could become a significant argument in possible negotiations. That is why Russia has concentrated more than 60 thousand military personnel in the region and is actively trying to oust Ukrainian units.
TSN reports this.
Romanenko noted that due to active hostilities, the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces over the territory in the Kursk region has decreased by almost half. In particular, attacks continue in the areas of Lyubovka, Darino and Plekhovo. Russia is also building up its capabilities, using both its own troops and soldiers from North Korea.
According to the expert, the North Korean military has basic skills in working with Soviet and Russian weapons, but faces problems such as a language barrier and unpreparedness for modern warfare, including drone operations. He added that North Korea’s tactics remain outdated: massive waves of assaults that are ineffective in modern conditions. This leads to high losses among the North Korean military, which already exceed a thousand people.
Romanenko also drew attention to the imbalance of power: Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region are three times smaller than Russian troops, according to Western analysts. He emphasized that, despite the supply of Western equipment, including Abrams tanks, additional forces are needed to stabilize the front, which are still lacking due to unresolved mobilization issues.
Regarding the geopolitical situation, the expert noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to intimidate the West, announcing the creation of a new type of missiles that could threaten all of Europe. According to Romanenko, this is part of a strategy to put pressure on Western countries, while Russia is increasing its influence on the battlefield.
He also expressed doubts about the ability of the new US administration under the leadership of Donald Trump to radically change the situation. The expert recalled that Trump had previously shown sympathy for Putin, and his team had already hinted at a possible reduction in aid to Ukraine. Romanenko emphasized that the United States can use economic leverage, as Ronald Reagan did, but it is not yet clear how ready Trump is for such actions.
The expert concluded that in the coming weeks, Ukraine needs to strengthen its position both on the battlefield and diplomatically in order to cope with enemy aggression and prepare for possible changes in international support.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have revealed the contents of the diary of North Korean military officer Gyong Hong Jong, who was liquidated in the Kursk region.
