The Biden administration is preparing to announce a temporary easing of restrictions on humanitarian aid supplies to Syria. According to the Wall Street Journal, the decision is aimed at speeding up the delivery of basic goods to the country ahead of the change of power in Washington.
The US Treasury Department will issue an executive order allowing humanitarian organizations and companies to send food, water, power generators and other critical supplies to Syria for six months without the need for itemized permits.
Economic sanctions previously imposed on the Syrian regime remain in place, but the United States wants to make sure that the new Syrian authorities adhere to promises to protect the rights of women and ethnic and religious minorities.
In addition, Washington canceled a $10 million reward for information about Hayat Tahrir al-Sham leader Al-Julani. The former jihadist leader suddenly changed his image and began to position himself as a statesman, which attracted the attention of the international community.
The temporary easing of restrictions is intended to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria, but further steps will depend on the actions of the new Syrian authorities.
