Newly elected US President Donald Trump published on his social network Truth Social a fragment of an interview with Vladimir Zelensky, which the Ukrainian leader gave to Lex Friedman.
In the interview, Zelensky noted that peace was made possible thanks to Trump’s efforts, adding that world leaders often cannot keep up with his pace.
Meanwhile, Zelensky commented on Trump’s statement about the impossibility of Ukraine joining NATO. He recalled:
“Previously they said that Patriot systems were only available to NATO members. So either we have been in NATO for a long time, or we shouldn’t make hasty conclusions.”
Recently, at a press conference in Florida, Trump criticized President Biden’s actions towards Ukraine, calling them a failure. He said that the war began because of discussions about Ukraine joining NATO.
“Russia has argued for many years that NATO should not interfere in Ukraine’s affairs. Biden, on the contrary, said that Ukraine should have the opportunity to become a member of the alliance. This has put NATO right on Russia’s doorstep, and I can understand how they feel about it,” Trump said.
Trump also noted that thanks to his efforts, NATO continues to exist, but, according to him, the alliance is “using the United States.”
During a press conference at the Mar-a-Lago mansion, he made a number of other statements about the war in Ukraine:
- In his opinion, the war can be ended in six months.
- Trump confirmed that the West understands the impossibility of Ukraine’s membership in NATO and said that he adheres to this position.
- He added that he was ready for negotiations with Putin, but only after returning to the White House.
