The Kremlin plans to discuss new security agreements with Donald Trump, the purpose of which will be a “rollback” of NATO to its eastern borders.
The Financial Times reports this, citing sources in the Russian leadership.
According to the publication, Vladimir Putin’s main task at the upcoming negotiations will be to reach agreements that will exclude the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO and force the United States to reduce its military presence on the eastern borders of the alliance.
Putin’s top priority is new security agreements that would permanently exclude Ukraine from joining NATO and limit the deployment of US-led alliance forces in the east, the article argues.
The publication’s interlocutors note that the Russian president is also concerned about what the global order will be like after the end of the war.
“Putin is seeking to change the existing rules of international interaction to eliminate threats to Russia. He is very concerned about what the post-war world will look like,” one of the sources said.
The publication says that Donald Trump may show interest in reorganizing NATO, as his views on the alliance have repeatedly caused controversy.
Trump has long expressed a desire to reduce US participation in NATO, and the world is changing, and everything could take an unexpected turn, one of the newspaper’s interlocutors noted.
The upcoming negotiations could become an important milestone for future relations between Russia and the West, the publication notes.
