However, according to international commentator Simon Tisdall of The Guardian, Biden will go down in history as the president whose foreign policy failed miserably.
Failures in the international arena
Tisdall notes that for a man with extensive foreign policy experience, Biden’s results were dismal. His failures began with Afghanistan in 2021, when he completed the disgraceful retreat begun by the Trump administration.
The expert emphasized that this was a betrayal of both the Afghan people and the US and allied soldiers who sacrificed their lives for 20 years. He added:
“Biden pointlessly dismissed the possibility of a complete Taliban takeover. At home, his approval ratings fell and never recovered.”
Ukraine – another failure
Biden’s Ukraine strategy has also come under heavy criticism. According to Tisdall, despite accurate intelligence forecasts about the beginning of the invasion, the United States overestimated Russia’s strength.
“If Biden had privately warned Putin in January 2022 that NATO would view any attack as a threat to Europe’s collective security (which it was and is) – and that in such circumstances the Alliance would defend Ukraine – is it true that Putin would have gone ahead ? – the expert asks.
Instead, in his opinion, Biden allowed a “drip of military aid,” which only prolonged the conflict. Tisdall points to cities destroyed, tens of thousands of dead and billions of dollars spent by the United States and Europe with no visible results.
Middle East: new wave of violence
The bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas was another Biden failure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as Tisdall notes, ignored the “red lines” set by Washington, which only underscores the weakness of American foreign policy.
Ideological foundations that failed
Tisdall sees three outdated principles on which Biden’s foreign policy was based:
- The belief that US global involvement serves the interests of the middle class.
- Claims of continued American hegemony despite apparent decline.
- A simplistic struggle between democracy and authoritarianism, which has only deepened the division in the world.
Why Biden failed
The expert believes that Biden’s main problem is his approach, which was more in line with the Cold War era than with modern realities.
“His tragedy is that he became president too late. As a Cold War leader, he would have been in his element. When he finally won the Oval Office, the former Delaware senator, first elected in 1972, found the world changed beyond recognition. Biden thought the Taliban would keep their word. He was sincerely worried about a nuclear war with Russia, but the treacherous Putin plays by different rules… Such naivety will not soon be forgotten or forgiven. In truth, “Honest Joe” Biden trusted the people, writes Tisdall.
