In the Colta canton, Chimborazo province, the certification event for community vigilantes was held for 33 Local Health Committees. This initiative aims to articulate actions with citizens for the execution and support of pregnant women, newborns and children from 0 to 5 to combat chronic child malnutrition.

Upon being declared Community Watchdogs, the Committees acquire co-responsibility for the Ecuador Free Childhood Chronic Malnutrition Project to jointly face this problem and become the voice that informs and sensitizes community and neighborhood leaders.

Pedro Lema Curichumbi, belonging to the San Jacinto de Culluctus community, is part of the Local Health Committee and yachay (man of wisdom) who works jointly with health professionals. “With the doctors we travel through the communities to help pregnant women with ancestral medicine and thus avoid maternal death,” he said.

In addition, the community and the yachay handed over the “command baton” to the Zonal 3 Health coordinator, José Áviles, as a symbol of work and harmony. The ancestral ceremony has as its meaning the connection with mother earth that drives communities to claim their rights.

The zonal authority reiterated its commitment to nationalities and indigenous peoples to ensure timely and equitable access to health services, as well as the strengthening of promotion and prevention actions.

The participation of the community is one of the essential pillars in the development of the programs of the Ministry of Public Health, which allows a direct link with the community, focused on respect for intercultural relevance and knowing the customs of each territory.
