Niger’s interior minister had said in early September that floods and landslides had killed 273 people and affected more than 700,000 people, as well as destroyed a historic mosque in the town of Zinder.
According to the data as of September 23, the floods affected more than 1.1 million people, caused the death of 339 people and injured another 383 people, the state news agency ANP reported, citing the civil protection agency.
The disaster has affected areas across the country, including the capital, Niamey, where nine people have died. The floods have also caused “extensive damage” to equipment, livestock and food supplies.
Some areas of the country recorded 200% more rainfall than in previous years.
Due to the damage to schools and the number of displaced families, the government has postponed the start of the school year until the end of October.
In Niger, the rainy season usually lasts from June to September and often takes lives. In 2022, 195 people died in it.
