34 people died in a road accident in Tamanrasset

At least 34 people were killed and 12 others injured on Wednesday July 19 in a collision between a coach and a commercial vehicle, near Tamanrasset, in the far south of Algeria, Civil Protection announced.

The accident, followed by a fire, occurred around 4 a.m. when a bus linking Adrar to Tamanrasset, about 2,000 km from the capital, Algiers, hit a utility vehicle, the source said. The operations of extraction and evacuation of the victims continue, according to the Civil Protection.

The wali (prefect) of Tamanrasset, Mohamed Boudraâ, went to the public hospital establishment (EPH) Mesbah-Baghdad in Tamanrasset to inquire about the state of health of the 12 injured, suffering from serious burns, according to the Algerian official agency APS. Previously, the delegation of the wilaya (prefecture) went to the site of the accident to follow the evacuation of the victims and the wounded to the hospital of Tamanrasset.

This is the deadliest accident in this region since the end of December 2020, when 20 people were killed and 11 others were injured when their vehicle overturned near Tamanrasset.

Bordering Niger and Mali, the Tamanrasset region is a crossing point for illegal sub-Saharan migrants seeking to immigrate to Europe via Algeria. The speed of motorists, including public transport drivers, is the main cause of road accidents in Algeria, according to the National Delegation of Road Safety, a government agency.

In 2022, Algeria recorded nearly 22,980 traffic accidents which left 3,409 dead and 30,479 injured, according to the national road safety delegate, Nacef Abdelhakim.
