Tunisian Coast Guard forces arrested 38 illegal immigrants of sub-Saharan African nationalities after clashes with them as they intercepted their boats trying to reach European shores, local media reported.

The incident occurred when the Coast Guard forces intercepted a boat carrying 38 migrants of Sub-Saharan African nationalities that went off the coast of the El-Lawata region of Sfax Governorate (central), according to media reports local, quoting Sfax Court spokesman Hisham. Ben Ayyad.
Ben Ayyad added, “The migrants refused to stop and started throwing stones and strong materials at the Coast Guard forces. They reacted violently to the security forces and were able to control a small boat and escape with a security officer on board.”
He continued, “By exploiting the boat, it was controlled and there was a group of migrants on board,” explaining that the security element “was subject to violence and was tied up. Also, during the operation , another security (member) discovered who had fallen into the sea water and had an injury at chest level,” stressing that “his condition … is stable”.
A large number of illegal immigrants can be seen in the Governorate of Sfax, and in the area of ​​Jebnina in particular. Tunisian President Kais Saied visited the region last week and asked residents not to fight migrants.
Tunisia is one of the main departure points for migrants at risk of crossing the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
