“Working to get more titles”
Luka Modric (39, Croatia) is expected to break the record for oldest player to play for Real Madrid (Real), a prestigious Spanish Primera Liga team, by agreeing to play for another year.
On the 17th (local time), Real announced on their website, “We have extended Modric’s contract for one year until June 30, 2025.” They continued, “Modric, who joined Real in 2012, has played for the team for 12 seasons and has become a legend not only in Real but also in world football.”
Modric is a veteran midfielder who has scored 39 goals in 534 appearances since joining Real in August 2012. He has won 26 trophies in various competitions with Real alone, including the UEFA Champions League (6 times) and La Liga (4 times). Real explained, “Modric is one of five players who have won the Champions League six times, and is the player with the most titles in Real’s history.” Modric led Croatia to a second-place finish in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, winning the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year, and UEFA World Player of the Year.
Modric will become the oldest player to play for Real Madrid if he plays in one game after October 17. The oldest player to play for Real, founded in 1902, is Ferenc Puskas (Hungary), who played in 1966 at the age of 39 years and 36 days. Modric said, “I am very happy to have been able to extend my contract with this great team for another year. I will try to win more titles next season.”
Initially, Modric was rumored to move to Saudi Arabia and the US Major League Soccer (MLS) after last season, but he stayed at Real. Spanish media outlet ‘AS’ reported on this day, “Modric believes that he is currently in the final stage of his football career. For this reason, Modric has accepted a significant salary cut. He will receive about half of his previous salary.”
