Only 5% of the information we see during the day can be captured by the human eye at night, that is, when driving at night on a road, obstacles can only be seen when they are 35 meters from the driver, which is insufficient distance. to bring the vehicle to a stop and avoid an impact.

San Salvador. Traffic accidents are one of the main causes of deaths and injuries in El Salvador every year; According to the National Road Safety Observatory, there are an average of 1,352 people killed and some 10,000 injured each year as a result of accidents on the roads.

In other words, for every one hundred thousand inhabitants, an average of 21.5 people die in vehicle accidents. Although the 2022 records reported a reduction in road accidents in the country, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Given this scenario, the firm 3M wants to contribute and support entities that work in prevention and road education, with the initiative “Expertise Academy – Visibility that Saves Lives”.

Thus, it seeks to contribute to the improvement of road safety in El Salvador and the Central American region, through the positioning of solutions with a high technological level and innovation, to save lives on the roads.

“Visibility that Saves Lives”, will share knowledge and world experiences on vehicle demarcation with a focus on technology and effectiveness seeking to create awareness in the transport sector; Communication materials will be made available to the National Road Safety Council (Conasevi) and the Vice Ministry of Transportation for the different road stakeholders, and work will be done to structure a training plan for inspection centers and traffic authorities nationwide.

Article 187 of the General Traffic and Road Safety Regulations details that vehicles with a capacity of more than three thousand kilograms, their trailers and semi-trailers, must place at least two highly reflective road safety devices on the rear and sides.

The Transportation Safety Division of 3M Central America and the Caribbean, studied for two years, more than 2,000 accidents in which mainly cargo vehicles were involved, the results detailed that 37% of side collisions and 41% of the rear-end collisions in the trucks were because other vehicles did not notice their presence in time due to the darkness on the road during the night.

1,000 trucks were also evaluated over two years and concluded that those without contour markings had 30 times more rear-end or side collisions at night.

The ideal placement of reflective tape will result in adequate vehicle visibility by increasing sight distance in various weather conditions.
