  • 28% indicate that Peruvian companies value hiring professionals who master the digital world, according to INEI.

The arrival of new technologies in the classroom has marked a new stage of transformation in professional education. The training centers must respond to the demands of the labor market at a national and international level, at the same time, contribute to economic and social development.

In recent years, the demand for careers related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM in English) have seen growth. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI); During the first semester of 2022, the job placement of technical professionals increased by 28%, only in Metropolitan Lima. This shows that Peruvian companies value hiring professionals who master technical skills, technology and digital technologies, since they must face the challenges of the market and global competitiveness.

In this context, Jimmy Túllume Salazar, general manager of ICACIT, private non-profit institution that carries out accreditation activities of the educational quality of academic programs, under international standards, explains some trends that pose challenges to higher education:

  • digital transformation: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital technologies in higher education, such as online education and virtual learning. These digital tools and platforms are expected to continue to be increasingly important in Peruvian higher education in the future, allowing the creation of new teaching models such as hybrid classes, that facilitate the student’s face-to-face or virtual assistance.
  • Adaptation to new labor demands: The demands of the labor market are changing rapidly, which is leading to a greater demand for specific and specialized skills. Higher education in Peru is expected to adapt and renew its offer with more specialized study programs oriented to the needs of the future labor market.
  • Internationalization: Higher education in Peru is increasingly connected internationally, which is reflected in an increase in the number of foreign students and exchange programs. Internationalization is expected to remain a key factor in Peruvian higher education in the future, allowing greater collaboration and cooperation between institutions and countries. The international accreditation of educational and academic programs plays a key role in opening opportunities for graduates for job placement and/or research, facilitating the validity of their Peruvian higher education degrees in other countries.
  • Focus on quality: There is a growing awareness of the importance of quality in higher education in Peru and Latin America, which should lead to greater investment and competition. In this context, the UNESCO International Institute of Higher Education presented a report on Quality assurance and accreditation criteria in higher education, a study designed to accompany the process of national agendas on the quality of higher education carried out with the support of the Ministry of Education of Colombia. They are all expected to drive continuous improvement and strengthening of educational institutions.
