4 facts and myths about plant-based eating

by time news

We see it more and more and it is indispensable: plant-based food. But confusion regularly arises around plant-based foods. Hans Kraak and Sytske de Waart wrote a book to remove that confusion.

Recently Hans Kraak and Sytske de Waart published the book “77 fables & facts about plant-based nutrition”. The editors already share a number of facts and fables:

1. Mushrooms are a good meat substitute

This is a fable. Even though the mushrooms have a somewhat fleshy structure, they contain little protein and other relevant nutrients, which would make them a good meat substitute.

2. More and more people are becoming vegetarian

This is a fact. Studies show an increase over the past 20 years. And more and more people indicate that they consciously replace meat with something else once or more times a week, also known as the flexitarian. However, this is not yet reflected in meat consumption.

3. Eating meat is bad for your health

A good argument for eating less meat, but it’s a myth. Meat provides good nutrients such as protein, iron and vitamin B12. It is better to avoid meat with saturated fats, red meat and processed meat. Saturated fat is bad for the heart and red and processed meat poses a number of health risks.

4. A diet with more plant sources is generally healthier

That’s right! But this does not mean that you should not eat meat, fish, dairy and eggs salty, just less than we do now. Cardiovascular diseases are less common among vegetarians. This is mainly the result of sticking to the well-known Wheel of Five of the nutrition center, which contains a lot of vegetables, fruit, wholemeal bread, nuts and legumes.
