Unidentified gunmen attacked Burkina Faso’s army and volunteer defense forces in the town of Ouhiguya in the northern region, close to the border with Mali, leaving 40 dead and 33 injured, according to a government statement issued today, Sunday.

The area has been under attack for years by al-Qaeda and ISIS.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which came 9 days after 44 people were killed by gunmen in the villages of Kourakou and Tondobe in the north of the West African country.

In a statement, the army announced that 6 soldiers and 34 volunteer members of the defense force were killed in the attack.

The government called on civilians to join the Local Defense Forces to try to stop the eight-year-old violence that has claimed thousands of lives and forced millions from their homes.

Unrest in Burkina Faso led to two military coups last year in which the army vowed to regain control of the country but failed to stop the attacks.

Mali witnessed the beginning of unrest in the region in 2012, after which violence spread to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.
