The department informed that the Utena district police received information from the border guards on Thursday morning that the minivans “VW Transporter” and “Opel Vivaro”, as well as the passenger car “Audi A6” accompanying them, had to be detained, because the vehicles, which were on their way from Latvia, could contain illegal migrants.

On the same day, a “VW Transporter” containing 23 illegal migrants was stopped in Daugali, Utena district, ten of whom were immediately detained, while 13 escaped. Ten of them were later detained in the same village.

Until Friday morning, three of the escaped migrants had still not been arrested, said Revita Janavičiute, the representative of the Police Department.

“Opel Vivaro” was stopped in Vaikuteni, Utena district. There were 20 illegal migrants in the minivan. On the other hand, the wanted “Audi A6” was detained in Utena. At the wheel was a man born in 1998, and in the passenger seats were men born in 1996 and 1999.

Two police officers were injured during the arrest.

After the arrest, the illegal migrants and the vehicles were handed over to the Lithuanian border guards.

The Lithuanian border guard has previously stated that greater risks than the flow of illegal migration across the border supported by the Belarusian authorities are caused by the so-called secondary migration, when persons who have illegally crossed the border of the European Union arrive in Lithuania from Latvia.
