“Imagine that 40 percent of the waste water of a city like Baku is discharged without going through centralized treatment. We are talking about 1 million cubic meters of water (daily)”. These words were said by the adviser to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources at the meeting of the Natural Resources, Energy and Ecology Committee of the Milli Majlis. Rasim Sattarzadeh expressed. He also stated in his previous statement that 1 million cubic meters of dirty water flows into the Caspian Sea from the Absheron Peninsula alone. If we take this from north to south along the coast of the Caspian Sea in the territory of the country, that figure doubles.

The main reasons for the untreated discharge of sewage on the Absheron Peninsula are the insufficiency of the collector and sewers in the country. Centralized sewage facilities do not exist in an important part of the Absheron peninsula, where about half of the country’s population lives. Some of them are either outdated or do not provide cleaning according to regulations. As a result of all this, both people’s health and the ecological situation of the Caspian Sea remain at risk.

Not only private companies, but also state companies discharge sewage into the Caspian without treatment. The information released by the State Environmental Security Service in July of this year stated that the fact that waste water from the ethylene-polyethylene plant of SOCAR’s “Azerkimya” Production Union was discharged through an underground channel to Sumgayitcha, and from there to the Caspian Sea without being cleaned and neutralized. The results of the analysis of the samples taken from the waste water revealed that the amount of harmful substances exceeded the norm.
