40 thousand euros – for general cleaning of the church (photo) | Information about Germany and travel tips | DW

Dresden • In terms of recognizability in photographs and other images, this baroque temple in Dresden may well compete in Germany with the Gothic Cologne Cathedral – perhaps the most famous German architectural landmark. The Frauenkirche Protestant Church, dedicated to the Mother of God, was erected in the capital of Saxony at the behest of Elector August the Strong (August der Starke) in 1726-1743.

At the end of World War II, the temple was destroyed as a result of the bombing of Dresden by British and American aircraft – during a giant fire that engulfed the city. In 2005, the church was restored with donations from all over the world and funds from the state and federal budgets. In total – about 180 million euros. The temple, resurrected from the ruins, has become a symbol of reconciliation between peoples – primarily Germany and Great Britain. In particular, the funds raised in this country were used to make a gilded cross crowning the dome of the building.

Before the start of the pandemic, about two million people visited the Frauenkirche every year. Soon after the opening of the restored temple, a new tradition was started here: in early January – so to speak, during the calm after the holidays – a big cleaning of the building and maintenance of technical systems. The photos in our selection were taken this January and in previous years.

Usually the work takes a little less than a week. Now they are in full swing. In addition to, in fact, general cleaning, cleaning, polishing, and so on, minor current repairs are also carried out here and, for example, burnt out light bulbs are changed. Everything costs about 40 thousand euros – from the community and donations. In total, about 30 people are employed in the work – carpenters, painters, electricians and other specialists. According to the dpa agency, everything should be finished by the next Sunday service.
