They are more than 50,000 women who live with obstetric fistula in Madagascar, at the rate of 4,000 cases per year. An anomaly that is particularly prevalent among the most disadvantaged strata. As in recent years, a campaign to repair women victims of obstetric fistula is organized at the Sainte Fleur pavilion, Anosy, from May 8 to 18.

The complete care of a woman affected by this disease amounts to more than 2 million ar. Far too high a price for most patients. For this campaign, 25 women aged 16 to 50 will benefit from free reconstructive surgery (cost of travel, consultation, operation, follow-up). This campaign is part of a cooperation between the Ministry of Public Health, UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), the Kingdom of Norway and the Order of Malta and Operation Fistula.

The beneficiaries of this campaign are from 5 regions including Analamanga, Vatovavy, Fitovinany, Vakinankaratra and Bongolava.

Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and dangerous injuries that can occur during childbirth. It is a perforation between the vagina and the bladder and/or rectum, due to prolonged labor and which occurs in the absence of rapid and quality obstetric care. Often the women victims are those who should have followed the progress of their pregnancies in a hospital and had to undergo a caesarean section. But because of their remoteness and lack of financial means, they are obliged to give birth to the matrons by forced vaginal delivery. For now, only surgery can cure obstetric fistula. This involves repairing the tissues making up the organs affected by the anomaly.
