In a recent announcement, the government has confirmed the gradual elimination of subsidies for Eco and Extra gasoline, a measure that seeks to alleviate the State’s tax burden.

To mitigate the economic impact on the most vulnerable sectors, a compensation program has been implemented for owners of taxis, motorcycle taxis and rural mixed services, based on their average monthly fuel consumption.

According to the official announcement, the price differential established is 26 cents per litre, which translates into a compensation of approximately 40 dollars per month for each driver. This financial support aims to cushion the impact of the price increase on the income of drivers who depend on intensive use of fuel.

As of June 24, the date of the first cut, a total of 12,000 drivers have registered on the Ministry of Transport’s platform, and are scheduled to receive the first transfer corresponding to the first month directly into their bank accounts. However, around 4,000 drivers have not yet completed the registration process for their bank accounts, which could delay the payment of compensation.

The government has assured that drivers who have not yet registered will have a few extra months to complete the process and that they will receive compensation retroactively once their data is verified and processed.

For now, the elimination of subsidies affects only Eco and Extra gasoline. The government has indicated that it plans to extend this measure to diesel in the future, although no specific date has been set for this second phase of the plan. This strategy is part of a broader effort to rationalize public spending and redirect resources toward critical areas of development and social well-being.
