Bhopal: With an aim to streamline future expansion and growth, the Indian Airports Authority has finalised the masterplan for Bhopal airport. It will be implemented in three phases – Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 by 2047. To achieve the final capacity of the airport, the runway is to be extended to a length of 4000 metres. The expansion will require the acquisition of about 65 acres of additional land. The concerned authority has already sought approval from the state government for land acquisition.
A carefully crafted masterplan
The expansion is important to accommodate the projected growth in air traffic and ensure that the airport can meet future demands. Airport Director Ramji Awasthi said, ‘The masterplan has been carefully prepared to meet the long-term requirements of Bhopal Airport. It emphasises the expected growth in passenger and cargo traffic as well as the need for better infrastructure and facilities.
Focus on facilities in the first phase
In Phase 1, the focus will be on enhancing the existing infrastructure and facilities to meet the immediate needs of the airport. This may include expansion of the terminal building, construction of new parking areas, and upgrading the air traffic control system. These improvements will help streamline operations and provide a better experience for passengers.
These changes will happen in the second phase
Phase 2 will involve more significant changes to the airport’s layout and infrastructure. This may include the construction of new taxiways, aprons and hangars to accommodate the growing number of aircraft. The terminal building may also be further expanded to handle the growing passenger traffic. These developments will help establish Bhopal airport as a major hub in the region.
What will happen in the final stage
The final phase is to be reached by 2047, which will see the airport reach its full capacity. The extension of the runway to 4000 metres is a key component of this phase.
This will be the benefit of building a runway
The longer runway will allow larger aircraft to operate from the airport, opening up new routes and destinations. It will also enable the airport to handle more flights, both domestic and international. The airport’s expansion is expected to bring economic benefits such as increased tourism and business. It is important to ensure that the development is sustainable and does not adversely affect the environment or the lives of people living nearby.
