41 million tourists arrive in hotel rooms in the first half of the year

During the first half of 2024, the arrival of tourists to hotel rooms was 41.1 million; of which, 29.4 million were national touriststhis is 71.5%, while 11.7 million were foreigners, representing 28.5% of the total, in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur.

Miguel Torrucoholder of the Ministry of Tourismnoted that from January to June 2024, cities recorded 23.3 million tourists, while beach resorts received 17.8 million tourists in hotel rooms.

He specified that, during this period, the hotel occupancy rate reached 60% in 70 selected destinations, maintaining the same percentage compared to the months of January to June of the previous year.

He reported that, in the first six months of 2024, city destinations recorded a hotel occupancy of 52.4% while beach resorts reached 68.5%; in contrast, the extremes of occupancy are those Comprehensively planned centers con 75.1% and inland cities with 47.5%.

Torruco indicated that, during the first half of 2024, the tourist centers that stand out for hotel occupancy are: Playacar with 89.8%, Akumal with 82.8%, Nuevo Nayarit with 80.8%, Cabo San Lucas with 80%, Cancun 77.7%, and Playa del Carmen with 75.1%, these being the destinations with the highest occupancy levels.

He stressed that from January to June 2024, the average number of available rooms reached a level of 437 thousand 179 unitsthis is 0.3% more than the same period of the previous year.

For beach resorts, in the period January-June 2024, an average of 206,945 available rooms were registered, while in city destinations, the average number of available rooms was 230 mil 234which represents a growth of 0.6% compared to the same period in 2023.

During the first six months of 2024, the average number of occupied rooms reached a level of 262 thousand 384 units, that is 0.3% more than in the same period last year.

They registered 141 thousand 706 rooms occupied on average in beach resortswhile in city destinations, the number of occupied rooms was 120,679, which represents an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2023.

Torruco reiterated that the hotel industry is the backbone of tourism activity, and pointed out the increase of 87 thousand new hotel rooms 2019 a 2023which add up to a total of 895 thousand rooms, which with this year’s estimates, will be 115 thousand new hotel rooms and 25 thousand hotels, totaling more than 900 thousand rooms, which consolidates Mexico in the seventh position worldwide.
