42 people drowned and were trapped by landslides in three towns in the province of Maguindanao, Philippines, due to flash floods overnight yesterday; 16 people are missing.
As the flood water suddenly rose in low-lying areas, villagers climbed onto the roofs of their houses to save themselves.
They were rescued by soldiers, police and volunteers.
Intensive rescue work is going on in various tribal villages.

Meanwhile, a storm named ‘Nalke’ is likely to hit the eastern coastal areas of the country today, according to the country’s Meteorological Department.
Subsequently, 5,000 people were evacuated from these areas to safer places.
