Authorities of the 48 Cantons of Totonicapán in a press conference this Thursday, November 16, reported that the election of their new president was void and that there was a new election.

The election was recorded on Saturday, November 11 in an assembly of communal mayors in which Vicente Juan Tzoc of the Chipuac community was elected president with 16 votes.

From early on Saturday, representatives of the different cantons, ancestral authorities and representatives from different sectors met to elect those who will direct the course of the 48 Cantons in 2024; However, this Thursday the decision was reported.

Luis Pacheco, president of the 48 Cantons of Totonicapán, reported that “due to circumstances” they found themselves in the need to decede and this due to situations beyond the control of the institution and for its own good.

He said that the new election was held in the assembly and Tedy Rafael Zapeta Tzul was elected, who highlighted the commitment he has to Totonicapán and to try to continue with the slogans that are indicated.

Pacheco explained that they made the decision because after Saturday’s election “they received some comments and it was necessary to ask the president-elect, who was very sincere in saying, ‘yes that is happening’, so we believe that to preside over 48 Cantons he should not “There is no professional or political interest in being able to be in this representation, we have said it, we are not partisan, so he also understood this situation.”

He highlighted that there are specific conditions in this organization of the Cantons and they must be met.

Pacheco added that there was only a new election for the president and they elected a member first, because the position was vacant.

He said that they already spoke with the president who had been elected on Saturday and told him the reasons for the decision and recalled that this is not the first time something like this has happened.

Zapeta Tzul, the new president-elect, said that he is “surprised” and grateful to Totonicapán for the vote of confidence they have given him.

He stated that he will try to represent “with dignity and under the instructions given to us.”

The 48 Cantons of Totonicapán have led demonstrations in which thousands of Guatemalans have called for the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras and other officials for actions surrounding the electoral process.
