The residents of 49 Spanish municipalities have an appointment with the polls. Today they are voting again in the local elections that could not be held in the month of May.

There are two reasons why this was not possible… on the one hand, in 5 municipalities (Almería, Murcia, Guadalajara, Salamanca and Ourense) irregularities were detected in one of the polling stations on May 28. And on the other hand, there are the 44 municipalities that will vote again since at the time, there was no candidate running for election.

The majority are very small, and no one wants to be the mayor… This affects 8,200 residents: the majority from Navarra where there are 38 towns waiting, in addition to 4 towns from Burgos, one from Teruel and another from Segovia.

In the town of Beire, a municipality belonging to the Community of Navarra, 2 candidates for mayor have already appeared. Here they were looking for someone from the town itself who wanted to take on this role and for now, Pilar Sánchez, recently retired and a native of the town, has offered and her neighbors are very clear: “better that it be someone from the town than from outside.”

In the municipalities where these have been declared void, they will be repeated in Almería, Guadalajara, Murcia, Ourense and Salamanca, as reported by Servimedia.

The repetition of the elections will be carried out in accordance with the royal decree issued by the then so-called Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Cortes and Democratic Memory on October 2.

Other reruns of elections

This is not the first time that a municipality is faced with repeating elections, either because there are no candidates or as in Burgos, where this summer they had to repeat their elections since half of the residents voted for a candidate who had died.

Another case was in Soria, where 21 residents of the town of Villaseca de Arciel did not want anyone who did not reside there to govern them and for this reason, none of them exercised their right to vote on May 28, thus forced to have to repeat the elections. elections.
