4intelligence survey carried out in 420 cities using artificial intelligence points to good results this winter, especially in Goiás and Mato Grosso

The Brazilian corn crop should reach record production in the winter of 2023, reaching 95.9 million tons harvested. Despite the delay in sowing due to heavy rains at the beginning of the year, the result represents an increase of 5.5% compared to last year. The data is from 4intelligence, a startup that develops solutions to support companies – from the entire agribusiness chain through artificial intelligence.

Using satellite images, the company 4intelligence remotely monitors the Brazilian corn producing regions during the winter, generating georeferenced climate data and following the development of crops from the time of planting to harvest. This year, it is accompanying more than 420 grain-producing municipalities, which is equivalent to 12 million hectares of cultivated area.

The survey also points out that producers in the states of Goiás and Mato Grosso, where planting has not suffered significant delays, should reach the highest average productivity in the country, with 106.5 and 106.3 bags per hectare, respectively. According to studies by the startup, productivity in municipalities in the central region of Mato Grosso, such as Sorriso, Lucas do Rio Verde and Nova Mutum, can exceed 110 bags per hectare.

On the other hand, the planting of corn for the 2023 harvest in Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul was the latest in the entire historical series, starting in 2016. Data from remote monitoring by 4intelligence indicate that, by the end of February this year, only 60% of production in these locations had taken hold. Usually, at this time, it is common for 80% of the crops to have corn emergence.

These results occurred due to the extension of the soybean harvest. Heavy rains in January and February made mechanized harvesting difficult due to excessively wet soil. Consequently, producers waited for more favorable weather conditions to start harvesting.

Despite the atypical calendar, the impact on average productivity will be small. The rainfall that occurred in April favored, to an ideal extent, the development of crops in practically all areas. In this way, the platform indicates that the Paraná producer will obtain 93.4 bags per hectare, a reduction of 1.5% compared to the 2022 harvest. 7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

“Technology in agricultural production works increasingly in favor of society. With data in hand and with the help of predictive models, we managed to quantify the impact that climate adversities can have on agribusiness in each producing municipality, creating strategic support for a of the most important segments of the country’s economy and the lives of Brazilians”, explains Julia Ghizzi, an analyst at 4intelligence.
